Into the Outdoors Nominated in Children/Youth/Teen Short & Long Form Content Category for Episode ‘Restoring Walleyes in Native Lakes’
Madison, WISCONSIN – (October 16, 2024) – Into the Outdoors, an Emmy award-winning kids edutainment series that leads in outdoor and science education both nationally and internationally, has been nominated in the 66th Chicago/Midwest Emmy Awards, which will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2024.
In the category for Children/Youth/Teen Short & Long Form Content, Into the Outdoors has been nominated for their episode “Restoring Walleyes in Native Lakes.” In this Into the Outdoors episode, the Adventure Team showcases federal, state, and tribal agencies working together to restore and support walleye populations in Wisconsin lakes.
Aside from the scientific themes of the episode, such as bringing the theory and hypothesis lessons from science class directly into a student’s world of future possibilities, Into the Outdoors highlights the traditional and cultural importance of these fish.
Walleyes are an important cultural food for the Ojibwe tribes in Wisconsin, and as the populations have decreased, so have their bag limits during the spearfishing season. Thus, the Into the Outdoors Team features ways management by the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, Tribal Natural Resource Departments, and the Wisconsin DNR have helped preserve this right as well as maintain a sustainable harvest to protect the species.
