Great Lakes Fishery Commission partners with Into the Outdoors for ‘Predator in Paradise’ airing December 28th
Madison, WISCONSIN – (December 10, 2024) – Into the Outdoors, an Emmy award-winning kids edutainment series that leads in outdoor and science education both nationally and internationally, is set to release a new episode exploring the sea lamprey’s impact on Great Lakes ecosystems airing on December 28th.
Partnering with Into the Outdoors, the Great Lakes Fishery Commission shines a light on their Sea Lamprey Control Program, developed to unite fishery management in the Great Lakes and control this invasive species. Canadian and American governments established the Great Lakes Fishery Commission in 1955, taking a binational approach that reshaped the ecosystem’s future.
In the upcoming episode, the Adventure Team dives deep into the vast waters of the Great Lakes, revealing the sea lamprey, including its behaviors and effects on the biggest freshwater ecosystem in the world. Into the Outdoors is joined by several experts in the field, who share insight into the species’ history, originating in the North Atlantic Ocean.
In this indigenous environment, sea lamprey coexisted with native fish. However, after entering Lake Ontario, spreading to Lake Erie, and the remaining Great Lakes, sea lamprey transformed from parasite to predator, killing the majority of fish they preyed on. Because of the sea lamprey’s prolific and exploratory nature, they took over rapidly.
‘Predator in Paradise’ captures the full notorious story of the sea lamprey, from uncovering its lifecycle and destructive impact to introducing control treatments and celebrating harmonious victories.
